Financial Information
Although the IRS does not require non-profits which gross less than $25,000 per year to report its financial records, the Lillian Smith Family Violence Foundation voluntarily reports all financial information to prevent any questions of impropriety and provide complete transparency.

Since we only earned a net income of $200 at our first 2006 Frisco "Race To Prevent Family Violence," we did not file 990 reports with the IRS for 2006 - 2008.

We did begin filing annual 990 reports for 2009 after raising a gross income of $7,355 and net income of $595, primarily from our first annual Rockwall
"Race To End Abuse" 5K/Walk, held 10/31/09.

See our IRS 990 report below.

History

J.J. Smith established the Foundation as a legal non-profit corporation in Texas in 2006 by properly obtaining and providing our EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS of 33-1134321, the names and contact information of three board members, plus a $25 fee to the Texas Secretary of State's office. He received the Foundation's "Certificate of Filing" from the State on 3/27/06. It continues in good standing today.

The Foundation did not apply for tax-deductible 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the IRS until 2010 because no funding was sought since its founding, with the exception of our 2006 Frisco "Race to Prevent Family Violence" and 2009 Rockwall "Race To End Abuse" 5K/Walk events. But since the IRS charges for the designation and it was not needed for these fundraising events, we waited until 2010 to apply.

Since the IRS advises that it takes 6-12 months before a 501(c)(3) status is granted, we are awaiting the designation.

Rockwall "Race To End Abuse" 5K/Walk

Through pre and post-event publicity, the Foundation was able to increase awareness about the problems of domestic, dating, child and pet abuse in Rockwall County with our Rockwall Race To End Abuse 5K/Walk. Since only 102 runners and walkers actually registered, however - paying $20-25 per person to participate - we grossed only a total of $7,355, and net (after expenses) of $595.

Title Sponsor Heritage Christian Academy donated $5,000 and Race participants paid fees to participate of $2,355.

The Foundation had hoped for twice that number of participants and higher net revenues, but problems finding an open date, plus conflicts for many on the same day as Halloween and Rockwall High School's Homecoming Dance, preventing that from happening.

Primary expenses of the $6,760 total were:

$   275 - for banners
$   340 - for trophies and medals
$   650 - for T-shirts
$   800 - for race timing and sanctioning through the Rockwall Running Center
$1,865 - for poster, website and newspaper ad graphics from 3 graphic artists
$2,500 - for Race Director J.J. Smith

As president and director of the Foundation, J.J. does not receive a salary. Because he has 30+ years of marketing and media experience, he was qualified to be paid a one-time consulting fee to organize, direct and promote the event.

In return for his fee, he arranged over $10,000 worth of sponsorships, discounts and promotion. The typical fee for the work he performed is $5,000 at similar events. This fee has helped support him while he has regularly worked an average of 10-15 hours per week to expand membership and activities.

As part of J.J.'s fee, he arranged:

  • A $1,000+ donation from Rockwall ISD to provide 30,000 flyers to parents

The second annual Rockwall Race To End Abuse is currently planned for 9/18/10.
